Grey part 5

Miles gets to Alex’s flat.

Please. Please. Please.

The cab stopped, and Miles hurriedly paid him. He rushed to the door, fumbling with the keys before stumbling in. That is the only full memory Miles had. Rushing in; a mess; a note; Alex’s body, lifeless on the floor; dialing 999; rushing to his love; paramedics pulling him off Alex; Alex being put into an ambulance; Miles grabbing the note; Miles running to the ambulance before it rushed off.

“Mi!” Matt greeted Miles anxiously over the phone. Miles desperately wanted to grip Alex’s hand tightly as the ambulance sped to the hospital.

“I’m in an ambulance with Al.” Miles choked out, eyes pressing shut. His hand reached into his pocket where Alex’s necklace rested.

“So he, er, he tried to-”

“Yeah.” Miles cut him off, eyes flicking back to Alex’s blank face before slamming shut again.

“Will he- will he be ok?” Matt stuttered, sounding like a child.

“Dunno.” Miles said shortly, his gut twisting. “They’ll do all they can. They said I found ‘im early. If I ‘adn’t figured it out…” He rambled off quickly, barely able to string his words together.

“… Miles.” Matt’s voice drifted brokenly through the phone. Miles bit his lip, bringing the necklace to his chest.

“Matt, can you t-tell the o-oth-ers to meet at the, uh, at the h-hospital?” Miles stuttered with a tight throat.

“Sure, mate… Whatever you need.” Matt responded. Miles hung up. His face was hot and his eyes were threatening to spill, but Miles refused to let himself cry just yet.

Please.

Hesitantly, Matt dialed Nick. On the first ring, an anxious voice answered.

“Hello?” The word came in a rush in a quiet panic.

“It’s Matt.” The growing dread in sharing the news nearly choked Matt. “S-something’s happened. T-to Al.”

“Oh god…” Nick breathed, in disbelief but unsurprised. “Miles called me a lil bit before. I didn’t quite believe him. Al wouldn’t do that, not Al. He wouldn’t. No, Al couldn’t. Alex is- no, he wouldn’t-”

“He tried.” Matt cut off Nick’s horrified rambling.

“…” The sound of Nick’s heavy, panicked breathing could be heard. Matt didn’t quite know what to say.

“Miles said to meet at the hospital. I’ve gotta call Jamie though. I’ll see you there.” Matt hung up before getting Nick’s confirmation. The situation didn’t seem real. It was impossible! Matt had just seen Alex that morning!

Finally, finally, the ambulance arrived at the hospital. The EMTs rapidly whisked Alex away. Miles attempted to follow the gurney to the operating room but was blocked by personnel. A nurse directed him to the waiting room. Trembling, Miles reluctantly sat down. The man gave Miles papers to fill out on a clipboard before patting him comfortingly on the shoulder and leaving. Miles gazed down at the forms. He stared until the words blurred through the film of tears threatening to spill once more. He pressed his palms against his eyes, wiping away the tears, while releasing a shaky breath.

Refocusing, he picked up the pen and read the questions. With every question, Miles could feel himself get more and more angry. How was answering these questions helping his boyfriend? All he was doing was giving useless information that would not save any lives. The questions were so impersonal. reducing Alex to nothing more than a name and a set of numbers. Handing back the forms, Miles wrapped his arms around himself and sat once more. The doctors working on Alex didn’t have a clue who they were operating on. They couldn’t know how his smile lit up a room. They couldn’t understand how his voice soothed frayed nerves with one word. They couldn’t possibly imagine the importance of the man that could very well die any minute, killing the happiness of countless people.

Neither could Alex, whispered a voice in the back of his head.

Swallowing his dread, Matt called Jamie.

“Eh… hello?” A nervous voice greeted Matt.

“Hey, it’s Matt.” He began. “Something-”

“has happened to Alex?” Jamie completed quickly.

“Y-yeah.” Matt replied. Jamie could be heard, swallowing loudly. His dry voice re-emerged.

“Did he- er… Is he- ehm-” Jamie attempted to ask. The terror crept through every pause.

“He- he’s going to the hospital.” A sigh of relief made Matt remorseful. “I don’t know if he’s gonna be alright.”

“I’ll leave now.” Jamie answered quickly, hanging up suddenly. Momentarily stunned, Matt put his mobile back into his pocket before realizing he was still in his flat. He rushed out of the house quickly.

Miles’ leg shook impatiently as he fiddled with Alex’s necklace. He glanced from face to worried face around the room. So many people were here, waiting for the deadly blow or the divine blessing. How many of them were going to be plunged into darkness today? He flinched whenever a doctor came through the doors. He felt a mixture of relief and terror when it wasn’t the name “Turner” being called. Every time, the doctors had the same grave face as they were approached. Then, it would shift one of two ways: a burst of relief and smiles or a wave of anguish and sobbing. On and off tears would come to Miles who shook them off, refusing to break down. He believed that maybe if he stayed strong for Alex, it would make him pull through. If he lived, there was no reason to cry. He bit his lip. He could crumble if Alex didn’t make it. For now though, he would try and be positive. As long as Alex was in the operating room, he was alive. Right?

A doctor entered. Miles stiffened.

“Pominsky?” Miles relaxed. No, Alex was still alive.

From the other side of the room, Nick silently entered, spotted Miles and joined him wordlessly. He gripped the bottom of the seat and rocked back and forth. They sat in silence, understanding that no words were needed for either of them to feel  the situation. Disbelief, fear, and sadness were written in the lines of Nick’s face, his anxiety making deep creases in it.

Jamie stumbled in next. He sat beside Nick, shifting restlessly. Even his face was contorting. Anger appeared one moment, the next, despair. He muttered without expecting a reply from his companions.

“How could he do this? Just try and take himself away. We need him! Doesn’t he fucking realize?” Shift. “We can’t lose him. We just can’t. He’s too important. Alex. God.” Shift. “Selfish bastard. He should’ve told us. This isn’t fair. Why would he do this?” Shift. Shift. Shift. His questions went unanswered by all three of them.

Eventually, Matt trudged in, remarking the necklace clutched in Miles’ hand. He watched Miles press it against his lips and look to the sky, obviously praying not to lose Alex. Quietly, he sat beside Miles, wrapping an arm around him. Nick sniffled, wiping a tear away. Nick met Matt’s eye. Matt noted the guilt and sorrow mirrored in Nick’s tear-filled eyes. He choked out a hollow sob, letting his tears fall.

“I failed him.” He whispered. Miles turned his eyes on Matt, resolutely taking his hand.

“It’s no one’s fault.” Miles attempted calmly. Jamie snorted.

“It’s Alex’s.” Apparently, he was in the angry shift.

“No, we should’ve seen it.” Nick retorted angrily.

“It wasn’t just for one reason. Let’s leave it at that!” Miles snapped at them. Everyone looked at Miles in mild shock from the sudden break of composure. “Sorry.”

Silence.

“Did he- did he leave a note?” Matt inquired timidly. Miles nodded.

“On a paper from his lyrics booklet.” He left it at that.

“What does it say?” Nick pried. Sighing, Miles reached in his pocket to get the neatly folded paper.

A door opened. They all froze.

“Turner?”
